The motion of no confidence in Steve Curran as leader of the council is due to a constitutional anomaly.
The leader of the council is elected by the Borough Council at the beginning of a four-year council session. This is the “Strong Leader” concept of local government.
The strong leader shelters cabinet members who are appointed by the leader and not elected by the chamber. It is for this reason that our attempts to censure Cllr Khan, Cllr Lambert and Cllr Dunne were unavailing.
Motion of Confidence or No Confidence
“the feeling or belief that one can have faith in or rely on someone or something.”
Well we have relied on Her Majesty the Queen
Our Sovereign,
Our Head of State,
Head of the House of Windsor
Beloved for many years and like the Leader she don’t need no lessons in how to behave, but why should she be marooned by traffic in our home town, of Chiswick?
We know the answer and it’s a lesson that needs to be learned.
But the same cannot be said for this Cabinet Led by the Member for Syon who is backed by 1963 voters who had a great deal of confidence in him but which confidence is now just a fragrant memory, just like the Visit Of her Majesty to my Ward, and on my birthday too.
She went through the Berlin Wall* via the Bridge at Turnham Green Station, reopened when I and Conservative colleagues including my seconder Cllr Biddolph pointed out that the diversion signs from Acton Lane made the route illegal.
She didn’t go to Syon to see the Leader, and she avoided Cllr Hanif Khan, she did not want to be in the shadow of Cllr Guy Lambert and her Press Office advised that she should give Cllr Dunne a miss because of her extraordinary ability with asterisks**, which has brought shame on herself, the Cabinet and the Leader and the People of Hounslow and the Ward of Syon. You could not make this up!
The shambles that is the Chiswick Street Scene leads to one irreconcilable outcome,……… There is no place in Hounslow for the residents of Chiswick who have been treated by this council with contempt.
The level and proportion of Council tax paid by residents in Chiswick supports those voters in Syon who voted for Cllr Curran, but wait, their turn will come, the Cabinet has declared open house on irrelevant traffic and street saving schemes.
They have declared war on the Motor car…..,,,so how are residents of Syon to go about their daily lives and find easy and safe transport to work? Walk, bike, Tfl Transport.. easy to say but not solutions.
Norman Tebbit said that in the thirties his father got on his bike, meaning that the Thatcher regime had replaced bikes with an economic engine of the first order, personal transport in the form of a saloon car. Ford Sierra Man.
But where is the plan? Where is the detail of all this massive Cabinet engineering? Not available yet as the Traffic and Transport team is too busy trashing Chiswick High Road and pretending that the re-opening of Turnham Green terrace The B491 a major thoroughfare is only temporary. Tell that to the closed businesses!
We have no confidence in the Leader who is unable to lead, who has made errors and mistakes in his choice of cabinet members, and whose knowledge of Political, Economical and Social Criteria is limited as is his lack of adherence to Technical Legal and Environmental best practice!
He don’t need no lessons from me, fair enough.
He actually needs an education in reality, the reality facing Chiswick and other residents of Hounslow in their daily lives dealing with this tin eared council.
The reputational damage is high.
The political atmosphere stoked up by stupidity!
The legal standing? A joke with a repayment schedule for PCNs rising and now a Judicial Review
What chaos! What a mess! What a shambles!
Shame about the Queen
