Conservative Councillors this week rounded on Labour run Hounslow Council for producing a “sham document” when presenting its Leisure and Culture Strategy for 2016-2020.
At a meeting of the Borough Council, Chiswick Riverside Councillor Paul Lynch criticised the document as being too vague and lacking in detail,
“This Report mentions nothing about the state of our Parks or which, if any, Libraries might be earmarked for closure. It is a waste of paper, a waste of officers’ time and quite frankly, amounts to Labour asking us to sign a blank cheque for them”.

These sentiments were echoed by Turnham Green Councillor Adrian Lee, a former lead Member for Leisure who attacked the Labour administration for leaving Libraries and Leisure in a terrible mess when the Conservatives took over the Council in 2006.
“Bedfont Councillor Sachin Gupta’s claim that this document is “visionary” is laughable. Labour does not know what to do with Libraries and lacks any innovation for them”, said Councillor Lee.

Councillor Lee suggested the document amounted to “managing the decline of our Libraries”. He believed there was so much more that could be done with them involving local Universities and e-based research as well as A-Level students and the need for quiet study areas. Moreover, the Conservatives are calling for volunteers to get more involved and take over the running of Libraries, as is the case with many other areas up and down the country.
