Local MP Mary Macleod has called for more support for women who are out of work. Recent figures show that although locally the Job Seeker's Allowance (JSA) rate is lower than the national average, the rate of women on JSA is higher.
Mary commented, “Women are four times more likely to be in part time employment which can sometimes put them in a much more vulnerable position when companies are looking to cut back on staff.”
Last week, Mary announced that she is organising the West London Jobs and Apprenticeships Fair, to be hosted by West Thames College on the 30th March and in partnership with Jobcentre Plus and BAA. Mary commented, “We already have dozens of businesses confirmed including Virgin Media, Sky and G4S who are bringing with them hundreds of job opportunities.”
Mary added, “Locally we are lucky to have a number of companies that are expanding and taking on staff. We need to ensure that people are made aware of these opportunities and that they are equipped with the necessary skills to successfully apply for these roles. We are holding several seminars at the event to boost skills in CV writing and interview technique as well as to discuss apprenticeship opportunities so there should be something for everyone. I hope that this event will help all those who are unemployed locally or looking for new career opportunities.”
